In Exodus 34:6, the Lord proclaimed His name to Moses which is "merciful, gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth." God attributes these great qualities to Himself.
"Now the LORD descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth." (Ex. 34:5-6)
GOD IS MERCIFUL
Mercy is not giving us what we deserve. The bible says that God is "merciful" and "abounding in mercy" (Psalm 103:8). He does not give us what we deserve or punishes us according to our iniquities (Psalm 103:10). He is "full of compassion" (Psalm 111:4).
"The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy." (Psalm 103:8)
"He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust." (Psalm 103:10-14)
"But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us." (Eph. 2:4)
"But He, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, And did not destroy them. Yes, many a time He turned His anger away, And did not stir up all His wrath." (Psalm 78:38)
GOD IS GRACIOUS
Grace is giving us what we do not deserve. Grace is the unmerited and undeserved favor of God toward man. The bible says that God is "gracious" (Psalm 111:4). God displayed His graciousness to us when He gave up His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Salvation is by pure grace. It is the gift of God through Jesus Christ our Lord (Rom. 6:23).
"Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful. The LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me." (Psalm 116:5-6)
"But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God." (Eph. 2:4-8)
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Rom. 6:23)
GOD IS LONGSUFFERING
The bible says that God is "longsuffering" (Psalm 86:15) and He is "slow to anger" (Psalm 103:8). He is "not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9).
"But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth." (Psalm 86:15)
"The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy." (Psalm 103:8)
"The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." (2 Peter 3:9)
GOD IS GOOD
The bible says that God is "good" (Psalm 86:5). He is good towards all His creation (Psalm 145:9) and "He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust" (Matt. 5:45).
"For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You." (Psalm 86:5)
"Praise the Lord! Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever." (Psalm 106:1)
"The Lord is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works." (Psalm 145:9)
